Professional Development The Fishbowl |

The Fishbowl can be used for demonstrating any technique to your students or to the participants. One teacher uses it about once every two weeks to model how to respond to student work because students can see how the process works (active listening, jotting down notes, asking the reader to pause etc.) and hear the comments.
They "learn the language" of constructive feedback. This activity consists of grouping the students who will model a technique in the center of the room, then having them demonstrate the technique, and having them or the teacher field questions from those who are watching. One group used the Fishbowl to model the tuning protocol. One small group who was demonstrating the activity sat in the center of the room. Seated around them were the larger group who did not participate during the activity. They only observed and took notes. This works for any kind of activity that needs to be demonstrated before having the whole group do it. |
